In 1973 it was declared a reserve under the Project Tiger and on 1st November 1980 it became a national park. In 1991 the tiger reserve was enlarged to include the Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries. This reserve is situated in the Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, about 110 km northeast of Kota and 140 km southeast of Jaipur, which is also the nearest airport. Group Size: max 4 participants
Each hide can accomodate 4 people. We envisage splitting the group into 2 groups of 2+1, ensuring that there will plenty of room in the 2 hides that we will occupy. A small group allows for a more personalised and intimate experience, and I will rotate amongst all the participants as much as possible. I aim to be available to all the participants throughout the tour and will assist with any question that may arise.
What to bring (this will not be provided by your host)
Your photographic equipment – check recommendations
Any medication you may need for the duration of the tour.
We will be sheltered by the hides, so adverse weather is not something we need to be concerned with, but please bring what you would consider to be suitable clothing.
Optional: Binoculars
Walking during the workshop
There may be very little walking to reach the hides and you may want to explore some of the areas close to the lodging, on foot. Apart from this, there should be no further strenuous walking.
Transportation and Parking
Transfers between the airport (Kristiansand) and the guest house is included. As is the transportation from the guesthouse to the hides. We don’t envisage that any other transportation may be required.
Food
All meals are included and will be prepared at the guest house – any allergies and special requirements will need to be advised and arranged prior to departure.
Photographic Experience
Whatever your knowledge and experience, you are welcome! All levels of photography are catered for.
DETAILED ITENARY
Day 1, Wednesday
We meet at Kristiansand airport, meet our host and then transfer to the accommodation. On route we will stop at shops in order to purchase food and drinks for our meals and any other sundries we may need. The accommodation has a well equipped kitchen allowing the preparation of all meals, coffee and tea. In addition we will each have a thermos to take a warm drink with us into the hides. As we have some time during this evening, an editing session will be provided as well as an introduction into what is possible and/or likely during our visit. No photography is scheduled for the first day.
Day 2, Thursday
An early start means that we get picked up at about 6:00. There are two hides – an open field hide and a pine tree forest hide. The field hide is about 10 minutes’ drive away while the forest hide is about 20 minutes. We will alternate between each hide giving everyone a chance to capture different species. We will spend a full day at the hides, being collected at around 17:00. It is critical that we enter and leave the hides under the cover of darkness.
We then retire to our accommodation, where we will prepare our dinner and the following day’s lunch and snacks.
Day 3, Friday
Much the same as yesterday, alternating hides, if and where necessary.
Day 4, Saturday
Much the same as yesterday, alternating hides, if and where necessary.
Once we return back to accommodation, we will have our dinner and then a final editing and critique workshop, allowing us to reflect on images taken and also how best to edit them.
Day 5, Sunday
After a well-earned rest, we have a final breakfast and begin our trip home. We will be taken back to the airport by our host.
Tuition, Field Craft, Techniques
Besides the two scheduled editing sessions on day 1 and day 4, there will be continuous tips and advice on Photography, Lightroom, Photoshop and Field Craft and we will also learn about the animals we encounter from our host. I encourage everyone to listen and learn during the tuition sessions and a laptop isn’t essential, as I will have my own, meaning you can make the most of this opportunity whilst still keeping your luggage light. I can provide (if required) a recording of what is covered during these sessions, after the trip.
